Cyber security attacks can have far-reaching consequences, impacting both Australian citizens and businesses. On average, a new cybercrime incident is reported in Australia every six minutes. Ransomware alone results in up to $3 billion in annual damages to the Australian economy.

Given these challenges, the new ‘Cyber Security Standards’ position paper emphasises the need for robust cyber security practices as our world becomes more interconnected.

The role of standards in cyber security

Standards are essential in the cyber security ecosystem. They set best practices that aim to promote data security, ensure global compatibility, and protect digital products. Standards also enhance consistency across industries and build consumer trust.

As Australia strives towards becoming a global leader in cyber security, robust standards will play a crucial role in safeguarding businesses, individuals, and national security.  Standards Australia has been instrumental in developing standards that help secure the digital economy. These efforts not only enhance protection but also create new opportunities for emerging technologies, driving international trade while effectively managing the risks associated with digital innovation.

New ‘Cyber Security Standards’ position paper

In consultation with experts from the national standards technical committee for information security, cyber security and privacy protection (IT-012), Standards Australia has developed a new position paper. This report highlights:

Key cyber security standards and frameworks

How standards support Australian cyber security priorities

Standards-related recommendations to enhance Australia’s cyber posture

The paper presents four recommendations to encourage the uptake and implementation of standards to support a cyber secure nation. These include adopting international standards for digital technologies, supporting industry engagement in standards development, and raising awareness and understanding of cyber security standards among businesses.

Improving cyber security requires investment from both private and public sectors. The report calls on Standards Australia, the Australian Government, and industry to work together to boost national cyber security and resilience.
